About

St. Manchan’s National School is a co‑educational primary school situated in Mohill, County Leitrim. Established in 2005, the school provides a welcoming environment for children aged four to twelve, delivering the Irish national curriculum with a strong emphasis on community values and cultural heritage. Pupils benefit from a balanced programme that integrates literacy, numeracy, Irish language, and creative arts, fostering both academic progress and personal development. The school’s ethos is closely linked to its namesake, Saint Manchan, and the local tradition of Monaghan Day, which is celebrated each year on the saint’s feast day. This connection to local history encourages a sense of identity and belonging among students. Facilities are designed to support active learning, with dedicated classrooms, a resource‑rich library, and outdoor play areas that promote physical wellbeing and social interaction.

History

St. Manchan’s National School opened in September 2005 following the amalgamation of St. Joseph’s Girls National School and St. Michael’s Boys National School. It is named after the early Christian Saint Manchan, who founded a monastery in Mohill around 500 AD and is credited with establishing many early churches in Ireland. Historically, the community celebrated Monaghan Day, the great Fair Day of Mohill, on 25 February – the feast day of St. Manchan – a tradition the school continues to observe annually.
