About

Gortletteragh Central National School is a rural primary school situated in the parish of Gortletteragh, County Leitrim, midway between Mohill and Drumlish. The school serves a close‑knit community of approximately 72 pupils and provides a full primary curriculum supported by a range of specialist staff, including special‑education teachers and a school nursing assistant. The campus is shared with Gortletteragh Community Playgroup, which supplies a steady intake of younger children each September, and two dedicated school buses transport the majority of pupils from the surrounding countryside. The school operates from a modern, extensively refurbished building (refurbishment completed in 2007) that offers contemporary classroom environments and facilities suitable for a diverse range of learning activities. An inclusive educational approach is evident through the presence of dedicated special‑education provision and a strong emphasis on personal effort, reflected in the school motto ‘Sár iarracht i ngach rud i gcónaí’ (“Always give your best”). Uniform standards, clear daily timetables and a supportive pastoral system contribute to a structured yet nurturing atmosphere for students.

History

Gortletteragh Central National School was established on its present site in July 1971, consolidating four earlier parish schools, Drimmien N.S., Fearglass N.S., Drumgowna N.S. and Gortletteragh N.S., into Scoil Chuimhneachain An tEaspaig O’Floinn, now known as Gortletteragh Central N.S. The school was built with government and local funding and dedicated to the memory of Bishop Thomas Flynn. The former school building on the same campus now functions as a Community Play School. In 2007 the current school building underwent extensive refurbishment.
