About
St Mary’s National School is a co‑educational primary school situated on Parnell Avenue in Enniscorthy, County Wexford. Operating under the patronage of the Church of Ireland, the school provides education for children from Junior Infants to Sixth Class. The teaching team includes four mainstream class teachers supported by a dedicated special‑education team and two school‑based assistants, ensuring that the needs of all learners are met within a supportive environment. A part‑time secretary and caretaker help the school run smoothly, and daily after‑school care is offered through the “Wise Owls” programme. The school’s ethos centres on creating a nurturing, family‑like atmosphere where each child is valued, encouraged and motivated academically, socially and spiritually. Emphasis is placed on mutual respect, tolerance and personal responsibility, with strong links to the local community and St Mary’s parish, including regular assemblies and services. Facilities have been continually enhanced: recent upgrades include modern classroom furniture, expanded playground equipment, outdoor benches and basketball hoops, as well as a well‑equipped P.E. Hall. These provisions support a balanced curriculum that fosters both learning and personal development.
History
In 2021 St Mary’s celebrated 70 years on its current site at Parnell Avenue, having succeeded the former Model School on Mill Park Road. The original building comprised two classrooms that now form the P.E. Hall. Major extensions were completed in 1983 and again in 2008, adding further classroom space and a dedicated office for the principal and secretary. In 2024 the school refreshed its furniture and enhanced the outdoor area with new playground equipment, benches and basketball hoops, funded by the Parents’ Association. The following year saw the appointment of a fourth class teacher and the introduction of the “Wise Owls” after‑school care service.
