About

Two Mile Borris National School is a co‑educational, Roman Catholic primary school situated in the village of Two Mile Borris, County Tipperary. Operating under the patronage of the Archbishop of Cashel and Emly, the school provides a vertical, mainstream curriculum for children from junior infants to sixth class, and includes two dedicated Autism classes to support inclusive education. The school’s ethos centres on achieving excellence in teaching and learning, fostering a supportive community environment, and encouraging active participation in a wide range of extracurricular activities such as sports, chess, and educational tours. The campus comprises a historic main building dating from 1912, expanded in 1995 with four modern classrooms and purpose‑built staff amenities. Additional prefabricated classrooms on the tarmacadam court accommodate growing enrolments, and a community field adjacent to the school serves both as a car park for staff and a versatile play and sports area for pupils. The school maintains strong links with families and the wider community through regular events, an active Instagram presence, and opportunities for prospective families to tour the facilities.

History

The original schoolhouse opened on 13 March 1846, the feast day of St Mochaomhog, on a 15‑perch site leased from Count John O’Reilly. Built with a government grant of £60 3s 4d, the rectangular building housed a single classroom and served the village until its closure in 1912, with Margaret Carroll as its final headmistress. A new school was erected in 1912, featuring two classrooms separated by a movable wooden partition. Rapid village growth in the 1970s prompted the addition of a prefabricated structure in 1977, providing a third teacher’s space. Overcrowding in the 1980s led to a major extension, officially opened in December 1995 by the Minister of Education, adding four new classrooms and staff facilities. Subsequent expansions have included further prefabricated classrooms and the utilisation of the neighbouring community field, ensuring the school can accommodate the continuing growth of the local population.
