About

St Mary's Secondary School is a Catholic girls' secondary school in Macroom, County Cork, with 431 students enrolled. The school is situated in a town with a long history along the River Sullane. Macroom developed as a settlement around Macroom Castle, which was built in the 12th century. The town was an important centre in the region, with the McCarthy family controlling the castle until the mid-17th century. The castle was later granted to Admiral William Penn by Cromwell. Sports fields, a golf club and Bishop McEgan College were later developed on the castle demesne after local trustees bought the land in 1952. The castle ruins were demolished in 1967. The town grew as a market centre, with the railway arriving in 1866. No subjects are taught through Irish at the school.
