About
Scoil Naomh Úna is a Catholic national school situated in the parish of Ramsgrange, Shielbaggan. The school provides a nurturing, child‑centred environment that seeks to build confidence, self‑esteem and academic potential while fostering respect for self, others and the natural world. Its ethos is under the patronage of the Bishop of Ferns and places a strong emphasis on Irish culture, heritage and the Irish language, encouraging pupils to use Gaeilge in everyday learning and to appreciate local history, nature and geography. The modern school building, completed in 1998 and officially opened in 2001, replaces an older famine‑era structure and benefits from contemporary facilities that support a broad curriculum, including active‑school programmes, science and maths awards, and a robust physical education offering. Parental involvement is actively promoted, with a range of resources and events designed to engage families in school life. The school’s commitment to wellbeing is reflected in its comprehensive policies on safeguarding, special educational needs, anti‑bullying and digital safety.
History
The current school was constructed in Shielbaggan in 1998 and officially opened on 5 June 2001, taking the name Scoil Naomh Úna after a nearby holy well. It replaced an older school built during the Great Famine, which also served as a soup kitchen. The St Louis Sisters taught at the school for many years until the early 1980s.
