About

Gusserane National School is a rural mixed primary school under the patronage of the Bishop of Ferns, catering for approximately 75 boys and girls from Junior Infants to 6th class. The school places a strong emphasis on holistic development, offering a safe, inclusive and supportive environment that nurtures physical, academic, social, emotional and spiritual growth. A low pupil‑teacher ratio and dedicated learning support staff enable personalised attention, while programmes in mindfulness, wellbeing and a vibrant Parents’ Association further reinforce a caring community ethos. The campus comprises four modern classrooms, a dedicated learning support/resource room and a well‑equipped office. Outdoor facilities include a large colourful playground with an enclosed basketball court, a school garden with a polytunnel, a playing pitch, and access to a handball alley, a local GAA pitch and a community hall. Each classroom is fitted with interactive whiteboards and Android tablets, and a 2021 grant has expanded ICT resources with additional tablets, LEGO kits and other STEM materials. The school also runs a breakfast club, an infant club and an after‑school club, and makes regular use of nearby cultural and natural attractions such as Tintern Abbey and the John F. Kennedy Arboretum.

History

The present school building was erected in 1968, replacing an earlier school constructed in 1898 that now serves as a community hall. Over the decades Gusserane National School has played a central role in the social, sporting and religious life of the area. A new classroom was officially opened in 2018, further enhancing the school’s capacity and facilities.
