About

Scoil Naomh Sheosaimh is a Catholic co‑educational primary school situated in the heart of Toomevara, County Tipperary. The school delivers the Irish primary curriculum within a nurturing Catholic ethos, emphasising the holistic development of each pupil – intellectually, physically, culturally, morally and spiritually. A strong focus on community, faith and active participation underpins daily learning, with religious education woven throughout the programme to foster a living relationship with God and with others. The school offers a vibrant range of extra‑curricular activities that complement classroom learning. Pupils regularly take part in Gaelic football and hurling blitzes, camogie, tennis sessions, dance workshops and educational outings to local attractions such as the Shannon Aviation Museum and Bunratty Park. These experiences promote teamwork, physical wellbeing and cultural appreciation. Modern facilities support these programmes, including a school hall for performances and assemblies, outdoor play areas, and access to local sports clubs and community resources, ensuring a well‑rounded education for all children.

History

The first school house in Toomevara opened in 1829, predating the National Board of Education. Originally a two‑storey building beside the ruins of a seventh‑century Augustinian priory, it housed four classrooms and served over one hundred pupils in the early 1900s. In the 1930s the school operated without modern conveniences such as central heating or electric lighting, and teaching included a broad curriculum from English and Irish to Latin and needlework. A severe diphtheria outbreak in 1939 prompted the construction of a new primary school, and the original building closed in 1945, later serving as a venue for card games, athletics and drama before being demolished in 1968. The current school opened its doors in 1945 and has continued to evolve, maintaining its commitment to Catholic values and community education.
