About

Scoil Naisiúnta na h‑Aille is a mainstream, co‑educational primary school serving the rural community on the outskirts of Cappawhite. The school operates under a Catholic ethos while welcoming pupils of all faiths and none, and it is patronised by the Bishop of Cashel and Emly. With five mainstream classes, two dedicated ASD classes, two Special Education Teaching (SET) rooms and a team that includes special education teachers and support assistants, the school provides a personalised programme of work tailored to each child’s ability and needs. The emphasis is on a positive classroom environment where high‑quality education is delivered alongside a strong sense of community centred on the school. The campus includes modern classroom facilities that have been expanded since the mid‑2000s, and further development has been sanctioned by the Department of Education in 2022. Uniform policy comprises a green jumper, grey trousers or skirt/pinafore and a school tie, with a school tracksuit for designated days. The school day runs from 9:10 am to 2:50 pm (junior and senior infants finish at 1:50 pm), with pupils received from 9:00 am under staff supervision.

History

Education in the Ayle area dates back to at least 1824 with a hedge school. The first formal school building opened on 19 August 1876, initially providing separate rooms for boys and girls, with two additional rooms added in 1909. The boys’ and girls’ schools amalgamated in 1935/36, evolving from a two‑teacher to a three‑teacher institution by 1939. A new two‑room school for 80 pupils was constructed in 1951 on a site adjacent to the original, and the 1960s‑70s saw the introduction of indoor toilets. In the mid‑2000s a purpose‑built classroom was added, followed by further expansion to create the present facilities, which now house mainstream, ASD and SET provisions. In 2022 the Department of Education approved additional expansion plans.
