About
Scoil na mBraithre is an all‑boys senior primary school serving pupils from second to sixth class, with an enrolment of approximately 194 students. The school operates a structured daily routine, beginning with reception at 8.45 am, lessons from 8.55 am, a short mid‑morning break (Sós), a lunchtime (Lón) and finishing at 2.35 pm. Its educational ethos is guided by the mission statement of Edmund Rice, emphasising the nurturing of good seeds planted in children’s hearts and encouraging perseverance and personal growth. The campus combines historic character with modern facilities. A major extension added in 1986 provides six spacious classrooms, each equipped with its own wet area and toilet facilities, while ongoing renovations have kept the environment contemporary and pleasant. The school benefits from high‑speed broadband supplied through the Department of Education’s School Broadband Programme, supporting digital learning. Uniform provisions include a generic PE tracksuit and a standard white polo and navy trousers, promoting a cohesive school identity while encouraging the reuse of older uniform items. The school places a strong focus on pastoral care and community involvement, offering a range of extracurricular activities and a supportive learning environment that caters to diverse needs, including dedicated learning support staff and special needs assistants.
History
The school was founded in 1868 following a bequest of £500 by Michael Coleman, with the condition that a school be established in Tipperary under the Irish Christian Brothers. Initially housed in a three‑storey former fever hospital adjacent to St John’s Graveyard, it accommodated up to 300 boys. In December 1931 the brothers moved to the new Mount Sion premises, and a purpose‑built primary school opened in 1939, costing £13,727 and providing 384 places. Further expansion occurred in 1967 and a six‑classroom extension with modern amenities was added in 1986. Since then, continual modernisations have ensured the school remains a contemporary learning environment.
