About

Milltown National School is a rural primary school situated on a hill overlooking the village of Milltown in the parish of Drumlane, County Cavan. The school embraces a Catholic ethos while welcoming children of all faiths and none, fostering a warm, inclusive environment that respects diversity of race, culture, religion, gender and ability. Its educational approach is holistic, aiming to develop knowledge, character, spiritual, intellectual and physical needs, and to nurture a love of learning that equips pupils for modern, multicultural society. Emphasis is placed on language learning, environmental awareness and community involvement, with strong encouragement for parental partnership and local community engagement. The school’s facilities include seven mainstream classrooms, two dedicated autistic (ASD) classes, a General Purpose Room, office, staff room, wheelchair‑accessible toilet, kitchen area and a prefabricated annex. A handball alley provides additional recreational space. Recent extensions (2008, 2011, 2015) have expanded the learning environment, supporting a well‑structured, safe and stimulating setting for pupils from junior infants through sixth class.

History

Education in the Milltown area began with a hedge school in 1824. In May 1862 a new schoolhouse for 150 pupils was commissioned on land provided by Charles Brady; construction started later that year and the two‑room building opened in late 1863. This school served the community until 1973 when it was replaced by a prefabricated central school, which itself was replaced by the current purpose‑built building in the summer of 1988. Further extensions were added in 2008, 2011 and 2015, expanding the school’s capacity and facilities.
