About

Fairgreen National School is a co‑educational primary school situated on Railway Road, just off the Main Street in Belturbet, County Cavan. It provides education for children from Junior Infants through to Sixth Class and operates under the patronage of the Church of Ireland. The school’s ethos centres on the belief that every child has the right to reach their full potential, offering a learning environment that prioritises high‑quality education, mutual respect and the development of both mind and character. The curriculum is delivered with an emphasis on holistic growth, encouraging pupils to acquire knowledge while also cultivating wisdom, confidence and social responsibility. Activities such as participation in the European Week of Sport and “buddy reading” during Friendship Week illustrate the school’s commitment to fostering teamwork, healthy competition and inter‑age friendships. By promoting values such as respect, empathy and personal integrity, Fairgreen National School aims to nurture well‑rounded individuals prepared for future academic and personal endeavours.

History

A two-storey building housing the school was constructed in 1867, with the schoolroom upstairs and the teacher's residence below. The play area at that time was the Pleasure Gardens, a public park now occupied by St. Bricin's College. In 1931 the building was redesigned and rebuilt on a single storey, without a residential area, and the one-teacher school became a two-teacher school in 1967 when Drumaloor NS amalgamated with it. Further extension, renovation and refurbishment took place in 2004.
