About
Mayglass National School, also known as St Fintan's NS, is a co-educational primary school in rural County Wexford, serving the area from Harpoonstown through Ballycogley and Ballymore to Killinick. The school operates under a voluntary board of management and the patronage of the Catholic diocese of Ferns. Enrolment is 114 pupils from junior infants to 6th class, taught by 5 classroom teachers and 2 support teachers, with a special needs assistant also on staff. The school's ethos is grounded in Christian values, and its code of conduct uses restorative practice, focusing on truth-telling and responsibility rather than sanctions. Anti-bullying lessons are delivered monthly, and an annual Friendship Week is held. The grounds include a full-size Gaelic pitch, a soccer pitch, a basketball court, a playground, an outdoor classroom and a garden. Literacy initiatives include the Reading Recovery programme, Literacy Lift Off and Power Hour, while numeracy work uses problem-solving strategies and the Ready set Go maths programme for infants. Infant classes take part in daily Aistear structured play.
History
The school was built on its present site in 1957 with 2 classrooms. Three new classrooms and an assembly hall were completed in 1987, and 2 further classrooms were added in 2016. In 1998, the field behind the school was purchased and turned into a full-size Gaelic pitch.
