About

Killaloe Boys National School is an all‑boys primary school situated at the top of Convent Hill in Killaloe, County Clare. The school caters for approximately 104 pupils and provides a balanced curriculum supported by a team of mainstream teachers, special education teachers and special needs assistants. Emphasis is placed on inclusive education, with dedicated resources for pupils who require additional support, and the school is recognised as an Active School, holding three Green Flags for its commitment to environmental sustainability and healthy living. The school’s facilities include modern classrooms, a purpose‑built remedial room, a teachers’ room and ample storage, as well as separate playgrounds for the boys. Extra‑curricular provision is extensive, featuring programmes such as Gaelic football, hurling, 5‑a‑side soccer, debating and a range of physical‑activity initiatives. The school is governed by a Board of Management appointed by the Bishop of Killaloe, ensuring that the ethos of partnership and community involvement underpins all aspects of school life.

History

The boys’ school was founded in June 1841 with 86 pupils under the young master John Moloney. Initially housed in a small two‑storey building, the school moved to a larger house on The Green in 1845 and then to John Street in 1852. In 1856 a purpose‑built two‑storey school opened on New Street, accommodating both boys and girls on separate floors. After the Sisters of Mercy vacated the girls’ premises in 1889, the boys occupied the whole building. A new single‑storey school was erected at the rear of the old site in 1902, though it proved unsuitable. The current school was constructed between 1963 and 1965, with an additional extension added in 1983. The highest roll recorded was 267 pupils in 1889; today the school enrols 104 pupils.
