About
St Peter’s National School in Phibsborough provides a warm, inclusive primary‑school setting where pupils are encouraged to thrive both academically and socially. The school follows a broad and balanced curriculum that aligns with the Irish Primary Curriculum, placing a strong emphasis on quality teaching, literacy, numeracy and the development of critical thinking skills. A rich programme of extra‑curricular activities, including music, arts, sport and a vibrant school lottery fundraiser, offers children the chance to explore diverse interests and build confidence beyond the classroom. The school environment is designed to support holistic development: classrooms are equipped with filtered water taps, and hot lunches are provided from the start of the academic year. Dedicated ancillary staff ensure smooth day‑to‑day operations, while a proactive Board of Management and a re‑established Parents’ Association work together to maintain high standards of governance and community involvement. The school’s ethos promotes a happy, nurturing atmosphere where friendships are forged and every child’s talents are discovered and developed.
History
The school began in 1822 when a local committee set up a school in the crypt of the old church, established to counter the influence of the area's Protestant schools and to help educate poor children in the district. The Vincentians took over its management in 1838. The cramped school moved out of the church basement in 1843, to a site believed to be that of the present building. A new school was built on St Peter's Road in 1891, as the old premises could no longer serve the growing population. The building held three separate schools, for boys, girls and junior infants, for 106 years, until they amalgamated into a single school in 1999.
