About
Longwood, Co. Meath is the setting for St. Nicholas' Primary School, a mixed Catholic primary school of roughly 299 pupils that includes special classes alongside its mainstream ones. Irish is given a prominent place, with certificates awarded for pupils' use of the language and Seachtain na Gaeilge marked through music and dance. Reading is organised around an accelerated reading programme, with class-level tracking of time spent reading, and the school also uses Toe by Toe and UFLI. Lámh, a manual sign system used by people with intellectual disability and communication needs, is taught school-wide through a weekly sign. Two therapy dogs form part of the school community. Sport covers Cumann na mBunscol football, hurling and camogie, badminton in the PE hall, orienteering, a walking track and an annual Active Schools Week. The school runs on a core values system, with certificates presented at monthly assemblies, and a student council. Uniform is grey trousers or pinafore with a maroon jumper, blue shirt and school tie. Because of pupils with severe nut allergy, nuts and nut products are banned from the building.
