About

St. Louis Girls National School is a vibrant, inclusive Catholic primary school situated in the extensive grounds of St Louis Convent Park, Monaghan. The school serves roughly 210 pupils and a dedicated team of 22 staff members, offering a caring, happy and secure atmosphere that nurtures the intellectual, spiritual, physical, moral, social and cultural development of each child. A strong partnership between the Board of Management, parents and the wider community underpins a curriculum that promotes holistic learning, teamwork, empathy and a lifelong love of knowledge. The school benefits from exceptional natural facilities: mature woodlands, a biodiverse lake with a man‑made crannóg, walking tracks and immediate access to the Monaghan Town Greenway, all of which enhance outdoor and experiential learning. Within the classroom, high professional teaching standards are maintained, and a range of extra‑curricular activities, including sport, music and cultural events, support the full and harmonious development of pupils in a safe, supportive environment.

History

The St Louis Sisters first arrived in the area on 6 January 1859, with Sisters Genevieve, Clemence and Claire beginning teaching in Mill St., North Road and the Poor School in Latlurcan. From 1863 to 1876 a primary school operated in the convent grounds (Old Brewery). Between 1876 and 1974 the school moved to Lakeview, catering to both boys (up to 1st Class) and girls. An infants school was built in 1963, and in 1974 the present St Louis Girls National School was established on Park Road, continuing the Sisters’ educational legacy.
