About

Sligo School Project is a multi‑denominational primary school serving the town and county of Sligo, offering an alternative educational provision in the north‑west of Ireland. The school places a strong emphasis on collaborative learning and mutual respect, inviting families and professionals to experience its practice through organised day visits. A broad programme of activities is woven into the curriculum, including music generation, guitar, model making, rope work, sports, and outdoor projects such as the construction of a willow structure, all designed to foster creativity, physical wellbeing and community spirit. The campus at Abbey Quarter provides flexible indoor and outdoor learning spaces that support both structured lessons and experiential projects. Recent funding under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) has enabled the acquisition of modern ICT equipment, enhancing digital literacy across the school. Regular symposia, ranging from child‑centred themes to interdisciplinary topics, further enrich the educational environment and encourage engagement with contemporary educational research.

History

Sligo School Project traces its origins to the late 1980s. It was founded by a group of dedicated parents in 1987 and initially operated from provisional premises on The Mall. In 1998 the school relocated to its current site in Abbey Quarter, where it continues to serve the local community.

Irish schools follow a standardised school year, so these nationwide primary school dates apply broadly to Sligo School Project. The school publishes its own calendar, linked above, and that is the authoritative source for its reopening date and discretionary closure days.

  • October Mid-Term Break: Mon 26 Oct – Fri 30 Oct 2026
  • Christmas Holidays: Wed 23 Dec 2026 – Tue 5 Jan 2027
  • February Mid-Term Break: Thu 18 Feb – Fri 19 Feb 2027 (post-primary schools: Mon 15 Feb – Fri 19 Feb 2027)
  • Easter Holidays: Mon 22 Mar – Sun 4 Apr 2027

Primary schools close for the last two days of the February mid-term week and may use discretionary days to take the full week, so their break can be shorter than post-primary schools'.
