About

St. Joseph's National School (S N Naomh Iosef) is a two-teacher rural primary school in Ardkill, Templeboy, Co. Sligo. Established in 1962, the school has 29 pupils enrolled. The Catholic co-educational school has undergone development over the years, with renovated classrooms, all-weather pitches and sensory play areas now part of the grounds. The school has adopted the Bí Cineálta policy, a national anti-bullying framework introduced in June 2024. Recent additions include a playground with 8 pieces of equipment, a refurbished wooded sensory area, an outdoor classroom and playground markings. The school's stated values are kindness and bravery, reflected in its Bí Cineálta motto.

History

St. Joseph's N.S. officially opened on 12th July 1962, replacing Templeterrace N.S. which stood beside the Church of the Immaculate Conception. The first principal had previously led Templeterrace N.S. A major renovation and extension project completed in 2006 added a classroom, office, staff room and storeroom, along with full refurbishment of existing spaces. All-weather pitches were installed in 2008 and 2010, measuring 600 and 800 square metres respectively. The school marked its 50th anniversary in December 2012, an occasion coinciding with an RTE recording of the Nativity play. Seafield N.S. was amalgamated with St. Joseph's during the 1970s, and the first Board of Management was established around that time.
