About

Ballyporeen, near Cahir in Co. Tipperary, is the setting for Scoil Teampall Toinne, a co-educational Catholic primary school with DEIS status and about 135 pupils. Classes run from Junior Infants to 6th, with year groups paired for teaching. The name translates as Templetenny School, taken from the older name of the parish and its medieval church, and the school describes itself as Catholic in ethos while welcoming members of other faiths and of none. Aistear structured play is used in the infant classes, and STEM and science work features across the school. Pupils take part in the Amber Flag initiative on mental health, in Scór na nÓg, and in ukulele playing. Sport occupies a large part of the school day, with 40 minutes of outdoor activity and a spacious yard. Gaelic football, hurling, camogie and futsal teams compete in blitzes and school competitions, and pupils have reached county finals. Field trips to nearby woodland and local history sites form part of the curriculum.

History

The older boys' school on the site, Scoil na mBuachaillí, was known as the school by the River Duag. It was officially opened on 30 May 1900, having taken pupils since 1899, with 154 boys on the roll and classes from infants upwards. A change to the national school rules in 1904 barred younger boys from schools without an assistant mistress, so the infant classes transferred to the convent school on 2 January 1905, and 1st class followed on 1 July 1944, leaving a senior boys' school. Pupils from Ballyheafey arrived by bus after that school closed on 1 July 1968. The convent school and the boys' school amalgamated in 2000, operating separately until September 2001, when they combined as the co-educational Scoil Teampall Toinne. Staff and pupils moved into a building behind the old boys' school on 22 December 2004.
