About
Scoil Naisiunta Comhghall is a small rural primary school situated in the Drumlin countryside of west Monaghan, about eight kilometres from Clones. The school serves the local Connons community and prides itself on a nurturing, caring environment where pupils are encouraged to reach their full academic and personal potential. Classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards and a dedicated multipurpose room, while specialised facilities include a well‑stocked library, special‑needs toilet, and modern PE and storage areas. Outside, landscaped gardens and two tarmaced playgrounds – one featuring a wooden play structure and a poly‑tunnel – provide safe, stimulating spaces for recreation, with the school overlooking St Alphonsus’ Church and adjacent community amenities such as a hall, football field and tennis court. The school’s ethos centres on inspiring curiosity and fostering a love of learning, supported by a small, close‑knit teaching team. Recent refurbishments have created a contemporary, purpose‑built environment that blends modern educational resources with the tranquil, rural setting, offering pupils a balanced experience of academic rigour and community spirit.
History
Scoil Naisiunta Comhghall was established in the early 1950s following the amalgamation of the Laurelhill and Clonrye primary schools. After a delay highlighted in the Dáil, construction began on a site donated by Miss Catherine McCaffrey and was completed in 1952. The school officially opened its doors to 55 pupils on 11 January 1954, inaugurated by Minister of Education Sean Moylan and blessed by Bishop Dr O’Callahan. Initially comprising two classrooms with separate male and female facilities, the school expanded its reputation under successive principals, notably Gerard Curran (appointed 1957) and later Catriona Donnelly (from September 2004). Major refurbishment and a two‑classroom extension were undertaken in 2006‑07, with the new wing officially opened by Minister Mary Hanafin on 30 November 2007. A historic visit by President Mary McAleese on 18 November 2010 marked a memorable milestone for the school community.
