About
Seven kilometres west of Louisburgh on the Mayo coast, Killeen National School serves the parish of Kilgeever, roughly 28 kilometres from Westport. Its Irish name is Scoil Náisiúnta an Teaghlaigh Naofa. The school is Catholic, under the patronage of the Diocese of Tuam, and children of all faiths are accepted. Enrolment is 67, with classes from Junior Infants to Sixth Class taught across three mainstream rooms. A special class known as Sunbeams provides a curriculum and setting for children with disabilities, with access to mainstream activities. Staffing includes special education teachers, special needs assistants, an after-school co-ordinator and a part-time secretary, and an after-school service runs at the school. The school has DEIS status. Environmental work runs through the Green Schools programme, with flags earned for litter and waste, energy, water and travel, and later themes covering global citizenship and the marine environment. There is a school garden, and the school takes part in the Active School Flag programme. Erasmus+ exchanges have linked it with partner schools in Spain, Malta, Poland, Romania, Turkey, Sicily, Croatia, Portugal and Greece. Mweelrea, Croagh Patrick and the Atlantic islands are visible from the site.
History
The building in use today opened in 1975, formed by the amalgamation of four national schools in the area: Carrowniskey, Killadoon, Thallabawn and Cregganbaun. The school marked its 25th anniversary in 2000. The Sunbeams special class, for children with disabilities, was established on 31 August 2015. Green flags have been awarded since 2008, beginning with litter and waste, followed by energy in 2010, water in 2012 and travel in 2014.
