About

Scoil Eoin Baiste is a co‑educational, Catholic primary school situated in the parish of Bree, serving the Galbally curacy. The school’s mission is to provide a well‑ordered, caring and secure environment that meets the intellectual, spiritual, physical, moral and cultural needs of its pupils. While rooted in a Catholic ethos, the school recognises and respects all other religions and promotes gender equality, the development of self‑esteem, respect for people and property, and a sense of responsibility. Irish is spoken during dedicated language lessons and informally throughout the day, reinforcing the cultural heritage of the community. The school occupies a modest campus built in 1950 as a two‑classroom building, with two additional classrooms added in 1991. Although there is no on‑site hall, the nearby community hall (built 1988) is used for larger gatherings. Facilities include a well‑stocked library of over 2,000 books, a resource room, staff and student toilets, a large basketball/tennis court, and a football/hurling pitch on an acre of land acquired in the late 1980s. A spacious schoolyard and ample play areas provide safe outdoor recreation during breaks. With an enrolment of around 40 pupils, the school maintains a close‑knit, family‑type atmosphere where each child is known individually and supported holistically.

History

The present Scoil Eoin Baiste was constructed in 1950 as a two‑classroom national school. In 1991 two further classrooms were added, expanding the teaching space. The school does not have its own hall but has long used the adjacent Community Hall, erected in 1988, for assemblies and events. A corridor runs the length of the building, with classrooms, a library (converted from an original classroom) and staff facilities arranged along one side. In the late 1980s the Board of Management purchased an acre of land behind the school, now utilised as a football and hurling pitch. Over the past decade enrolment has averaged about 40 pupils, preserving a small‑school community ethos.
