About

Scoil Bhríde is a modern primary school situated in Killeshandra, County Cavan, offering a safe and inclusive learning environment for children of varying abilities and needs. The school’s educational philosophy centres on the holistic development of pupils, fostering spiritual, intellectual, emotional and social growth. A strong emphasis is placed on the Irish language, with informal Gaeilge spoken throughout the day and participation in Seachtain na Gaeilge each year, reinforcing cultural heritage alongside the curriculum. The campus features spacious, well‑equipped classrooms fitted with internet access and interactive whiteboards, supporting contemporary teaching methods. Outdoor facilities include two large playgrounds – one for junior and one for senior pupils – complete with basketball courts, football pitches, a sand area and an Astroturf pitch. A school garden provides hands‑on experience in growing and maintaining plants and vegetables. Additional strengths are the free school book scheme, an active Parent Association, and a commitment to sustainability demonstrated through multiple Green Schools flags and an Amber Flag for wellbeing. Scoil Bhríde also participates in the Active School Programme, having earned its first Active Flag in 2024.

History

The current Scoil Bhríde building was built to replace an earlier school erected in 1925, which had operated as two distinct schools, one for boys and one for girls, in a four-classroom building. Both schools were amalgamated in 1974, when Tomás Ó Raghallaigh was appointed Principal. The new six-classroom building, with a general purpose room, an office, a staffroom, a library and a storeroom, was officially opened in 1982 by the then Minister for Transport and Posts and Telegraphs, John P Wilson. A large extension to the building was granted by Norma Foley, Minister of Education, in November 2022.
