About

Kill National School is a Catholic primary school situated in the rural parish of Kill, serving children from junior infants to sixth class. The school prides itself on providing a welcoming, inclusive environment where quality teaching and learning are at the heart of everyday life. Small class sizes enable personalised attention, fostering a friendly atmosphere in which pupils feel safe, well‑disciplined and encouraged to reach their full potential. A strong partnership ethos – “Ag Obair le chéile” – underpins collaboration between pupils, parents, staff and the wider community, ensuring that education is a shared endeavour. The curriculum is broad and balanced, encompassing core subjects such as English, maths and Gaeilge alongside a rich programme of arts, music, drama, science and physical education. Digital resources and classroom‑specific Padlet links support interactive learning, while the school’s crest reflects its commitment to spiritual heritage, Irish culture and environmental responsibility. Governance is provided by an elected board of management and an active parents association, both dedicated to maintaining high standards and continuous improvement.

History

Prior to 1972 the parish had four small one‑teacher schools (Kill, Drumnatrade, Cornasaus and Tullyvin). In the late 1960s the Department of Education policy favoured the closure of these schools and the creation of a central school. Consequently, St Brigid’s National School opened in 1972 as a three‑teacher institution, initially serving the whole parish with two bus routes. Over the following decades enrolment grew, a fourth teacher joined, and a remedial (learning support) teacher was appointed in 1998. The school operates under the patronage of the Bishop of Kilmore and is managed by a community‑representative board of management. Its motto, “Ag Obair le chéile”, reflects a philosophy of collaborative partnership.
