About
Kilglass National School provides a vibrant, safe and inclusive primary‑age learning environment for the children of Kilglass and the surrounding community. The school’s ethos centres on delivering a high‑quality, fun‑filled education that balances academic rigour with creative and physical development. A broad curriculum encompasses mathematics, the arts, physical education, religion, social, personal and health education, as well as environmental and scientific studies, and places a strong emphasis on the Irish language through programmes such as Gaeilge Bheo and Aistear. The campus has been continually modernised: recent extensions have added contemporary classrooms, a resource room, universal and ensuite toilets, and a refreshed entrance hall. Outdoor facilities include a well‑maintained field, an astro‑turf pitch and a basketball court, supporting a lively programme of sports and extracurricular activities. The school also celebrates achievement through regular news updates, STEM awards, literacy and maths initiatives, and a robust home‑school link that keeps parents informed and involved in daily school life.
History
Kilglass National School was founded in 1872 in a thatched building on its present site. A new structure erected in 1902 remains part of the current school, with extensions in 1951, the 1980s (re‑roofing, rewiring and new toilet block), and a major remodel in 2011 that added three classrooms, an office and a field with astro‑turf and a basketball court. Further expansions in 2016 introduced a classroom, resource room, store and foyer, while 2020 saw a new mainstream classroom with ensuite facilities, a revised entrance hall, office and universal WC, plus an extension to the basketball court. Over its 150‑year history the school has grown from a modest 90‑pupil roll in 1916 to a current enrolment of 124 pupils, and has evolved from teaching only reading, writing and arithmetic to offering a comprehensive modern curriculum.
