About

St. Flannan’s National School in Inagh, County Clare, is a mixed primary school that blends a nurturing community ethos with a forward‑looking curriculum. The school places a strong emphasis on personal development, highlighted by its February focus on “Friendships” and the daily Active Break Challenge, which encourages movement and social interaction throughout the school day. A broad range of extracurricular activities, including basketball, camogie, speech & drama, and swimming, support a holistic approach to learning, while regular maths projects and quiz competitions foster academic rigour. The school benefits from modern infrastructure, notably high‑speed broadband delivered through the Department of Education’s School Broadband Programme, ensuring that pupils have reliable access to digital resources for both classroom and home‑based learning. Facilities accommodate a variety of age groups, from junior infants to sixth class, with dedicated spaces for sports, creative arts, and quiet study. The active involvement of a Board of Management and a collaborative staff team underpins a supportive environment where pupils can thrive academically, socially and physically.

History

The first primary school in Inagh stood beside the church, in a building that was built in 1803 and today forms part of the Parish Hall. It was replaced in 1930 by a new building, which operated with 3 teachers until 1974. In 1974, Gortbofearna N.S. was amalgamated with Inagh N.S., bringing the number of teachers to 5. A new school was built in 1985 on a farm that had been acquired by the Inagh Group. The farm later came to include 2 rural housing schemes and a GAA pitch. The new school took the name St Flannan's N.S. A dedicated classroom for children with autism, known as Suaimhneas, was added in 2002. In 2009 the school was extended with two further mainstream classrooms, two ASD classrooms, a therapy room, a multi-sensory room and a large hall.
