About

Coláiste Muire is a Catholic voluntary secondary school in Tuar Mhic Éadaigh (Tourmakeady), Co. Mayo, under the trusteeship of Coláiste Thuar Mhic Éadaigh Teoranta. It is a non-fee-paying, grant-aided, co-educational school in the Gaeltacht, where students study subjects through the medium of Irish. The school encourages the use of Gaeilge among students and participates in the Gaeltacht School Recognition Scheme. Enrolment stands at 95 students. The Junior Cycle includes eight core subjects: Gaeilge, English, Maths, History, Geography, Science, Business Studies and French. Students choose two optional subjects from Technical Drawing, Woodwork and Home Economics. Non-exam subjects include CSPE, P.E., SPHE, Religion and Computers. Students who answer State Examinations through Irish receive a 10% bonus on their marked grade. The school also offers Transition Year and Leaving Certificate programmes including LCVP. School bus transport brings students from local primary schools and from Ballintubber, Ballyheane, Knockrooskey, Killawalla, Newport, Westport, Ballinrobe and Castlebar. The school provides a learning support programme for students with special educational needs.
