About

Multi-denominational and co-educational, Citywest Educate Together National School teaches about 376 pupils at Cooldown Commons, Fortunestown Lane, Saggart, Dublin 24. It opened in 2012 in a converted retail building at Citywest, sharing the complex with another primary school, after local parents campaigned for an Educate Together school in the Tallaght area. The school moved into a permanent building in December 2019. Classes carry animal names such as Hawthorn, Kingfisher, Otter, Skylark, Swan, Puffin, Whale, Jellyfish and Starfish, and both mainstream and special classes operate. Restorative Practice underpins a monthly core value, running through fairness, respect, inclusion, empathy, nurture, perspective-taking, safety, honesty, cooperation and happiness. A student council is elected by pupils, who make speeches and vote by ballot. Grounds include two basketball courts, a sports hall, a soft play area, two yards and a running path used for a daily mile. Ukulele is taught in the senior classes, and after-school classes have included French. When asked what mattered about the school, pupils named friendship, caring, respect and equality most often.

History

The school opened in September 2012 in a Citywest building originally built as a shopping complex for a boutique golf village, a development that was never completed and whose owner's property company later collapsed. Facing a shortage of school places locally, the Department of Education and Skills leased the premises from the receivers and two national schools opened side by side there. Local parents had campaigned since May 2008 for an Educate Together school in the area, and planners recognised the need after census figures showed one of the sharpest population increases in the country. Because the rooms had been intended as shops, the classrooms have large windows, and interactive whiteboards were already installed from an abandoned plan to use the site as a college for international students. After seven and a half years in temporary accommodation, the school moved into its permanent building in December 2019.
