About
St Mary’s Christian Brothers Primary School, known locally as the Greenschool, is a co‑educational primary institution situated on John Street in Carrick‑on‑Suir, County Tipperary. The school provides a full primary curriculum from junior infants through to sixth class, operating a structured timetable that begins at 9:20 am, includes a short mid‑morning break and a one‑hour lunch, and finishes at 3:00 pm. A comprehensive school calendar outlines holidays, public holidays, mid‑term breaks and staff training days, ensuring clear communication with families throughout the academic year. The school’s educational philosophy, set out in its mission statement, emphasises a happy, healthy environment that nurtures each pupil’s spiritual, emotional, social, physical and academic development. Holistic learning is supported by dedicated special‑education staff, special needs assistants and a range of pastoral resources, including chaplaincy services and a school community liaison. Facilities include well‑equipped classrooms, a modernised toilet block, and dedicated spaces for special educational needs, all maintained by a caretaker and maintenance team to provide a safe and welcoming setting for learning.
History
The school traces its origins to 1805 when Edmund Rice and local wine merchant Thomas Dunphy, in consultation with the parish priest, secured a site at Ballylynch for the education of poor boys. Construction beside the present Brothers’ monastery on Pill Road was completed in October 1805 and the first pupils entered in January 1806 under the guidance of two Christian Brothers and Mr Dunphy. Extensions followed in 1818, and by the early 1860s the Town Commissioners provided a free site on the Fair Green, where the “Green School” opened with two large classrooms. In 1935 Irish became the primary language of instruction, and in 1944 the school was further expanded with additional classrooms and a new toilet block. The post‑war period saw rapid growth, with enrolments reaching 379 pupils by 1960, prompting negotiations for a new primary facility.
