About

Opened in September 2002, Tralee Educate Together National School was the first multi-denominational primary school in Co. Kerry. It is co-educational, has DEIS status and enrols about 88 pupils, drawn from Tralee town and from surrounding areas including Ardfert, Milltown, Lixnaw, Kilflynn, Abbeydorney and Killarney, with a Bus Éireann service serving the school. The ethos rests on four principles: equality-based, co-educational, democratically run and child-centred. In place of religious instruction, the timetable sets aside time for the Learn Together programme, divided into strands on belief systems, equality and justice, ethics and environment, and moral and spiritual education, introducing pupils to the major world religions along with humanism, atheism and agnosticism. Faith formation is not taught during the school day, though religious teaching outside school hours is facilitated. Pupils do not wear a uniform and address teachers by their first names. A student council is elected each year and meets to raise matters with school management and organise events. Classes are taught in combined year groups, with an after-school club for infants. A school garden and a multi-faith and culture day form part of the year.

History

Tralee Educate Together National School opened in September 2002 as the first multi-denominational school in Co. Kerry, under the patronage of Educate Together. Its logo was designed by a parent following an invitation to the school community to submit ideas, and depicts three strands, representing children, teachers and parents, plaited into a rope within a circle standing for unity. The colours green, white and gold were settled on in 2010. A student council has been in place since 2004, and the school marked its tenth anniversary.
