About
Applewood in Swords is home to Thornleigh Educate Together National School, a multi-denominational, co-educational primary school with DEIS status and roughly 313 pupils. As an Educate Together school it works to four stated principles: equality-based, child-centred, co-educational and democratically run. No single religion or worldview takes precedence, and parents and pupils are encouraged to take an active part in how the school is run. Autism classes operate alongside the mainstream classes, with separate enrolment arrangements for each. A home school community liaison role supports families, covering questions about children's education and access to adult courses, and the school takes part in the Nurture Schools programme. There is a student council, a choir and a parents' association. Afterschool care, an infant "stay and play" hour and holiday programmes are run on site by an external childcare provider. The school operates a voluntary opt-in code, agreed with other primary schools locally, under which parents are asked to hold off on buying a child a smartphone until after primary school. Smartphones are not permitted in school.
