About
Ss Peter & Paul’s C.B.S. is a large Catholic all‑boys school in the heart of Clonmel, providing education from Junior Infants through to 6th class. The school’s ethos is centred on the holistic development of each pupil – nurturing spirit, mind and body – and it welcomes children of all faiths and cultural backgrounds. A strong emphasis is placed on creating happy, confident learners who become enthusiastic participants in both academic and extracurricular life. The curriculum is complemented by a broad programme of activities, including sport, music, debating and a newly established autism class, ensuring that every pupil can explore and develop personal interests. Facilities include a dedicated playground, a sports field acquired in the late 1920s, and a breakfast and after‑school club that supports extended learning and care. The school’s commitment to self‑discipline, respect for the environment and community involvement underpins its aim to prepare students for future challenges.
History
The Christian Brothers first arrived in Clonmel in 1847, with Bro Francis Thornton appointed as the inaugural principal. A monastery was erected in 1849 and the High School opened in 1890. In 1926 the school came under the National Education Board, receiving state grants, and a small field was purchased in 1927 with a playground added in 1944. The foundation stone for the present school was laid on 8 December 1964; the building was occupied on 28 June 1967 and officially opened later that year by Minister for Education Donough O’Malley. Subsequent developments included the demolition of the old school in 1971, the use of the former High School for primary classes in 1973, an extension in 1979 and the appointment of the first lay principal in 1987. The current principal is Ms Yvonne Moran.
