About
St. Mogue’s College is a close‑knit secondary school in Bawnboy, County Cavan, that prides itself on achieving academic excellence through partnership and community spirit. The college’s mission is to provide a safe, respectful and inclusive environment where every learner can reach their full potential, with a strong emphasis on sustainability, equality and social responsibility. Over six decades the school has built a reputation for high achievement, being recognised by Oxford and Cambridge Universities as one of only five Irish schools featured in a publication on centres of educational excellence in the UK and Ireland. The campus blends historic roots with modern facilities. Recent building programmes have added a welcoming foyer, a state‑of‑the‑art language laboratory, a dedicated sacred space, a well‑equipped canteen and a range of contemporary classrooms. A twelve‑room extension and continual curriculum expansion, particularly into Information Technology, underpin its status as a 21st‑century learning centre – a claim reinforced by being named “Irish Digital School of the Year 2014”. The school’s partnership‑focused ethos, robust digital infrastructure and broad subject offering make it a vibrant hub for both academic and personal development.
History
The college originated in 1932 when the Cavan VEC rented space in the Bawnboy Workhouse for Domestic Science classes. Within three years the curriculum grew to 13 subjects with three teachers, serving day and night students. A purpose‑built school opened on the present site in 1966, and by 1979 all day‑class pupils were progressing to Leaving Certificate level. Extensions followed in 1987 (twelve rooms) and a renaming to St. Mogue’s College in 1992. A new crest and uniform were introduced in 2006, alongside the motto “Spréach Eolais, Borradh Feabhais”. Further development in 2011 added a foyer, language lab, sacred space, canteen and additional classrooms, culminating in the college being awarded Irish Digital School of the Year in 2014.
