History

St. Mary's traces its origins to a pension school that opened in 1887 inside a former prison block of the old Gaol, which the Sisters of Mercy had bought. In 1913 the 'Round House', previously the Governor's residence, became the Intermediate School, and a Boarding School opened in 1927 within the building called St. Catherine's, formerly the remodelled female infirmary of the gaol. The Intermediate School was renamed St. Mary's Secondary School in 1929, and after moving location more than once, it settled in 1957 into the building that now forms the core of the school, within the convent grounds. The centenary year was marked by the construction of St. Joseph's Block. The boarding school, expanded with extra classrooms in 1959-60, closed in 1972, its space converted into classrooms. Transition Year was introduced in 1975, a further extension followed in 1980, and in 1982 a class was set up for students with special needs. A new sports complex and classroom extensions were completed in 2007.
