About

Set in the rural parish of Donoughmore, Co. Cork, St Lachteen's is a co-educational Catholic primary school at Ballykerwick with an enrolment of 162. Mainstream classes from junior infants to 6th run alongside two autism classes. The school states that inclusiveness and a caring ethos are what its community works towards. Sport is prominent: hurling, camogie and football teams compete in Sciath na Scol and in Duhallow and mid-Cork competitions, and pupils have taken part in rowing at the National Rowing Centre, athletics, tug of war, basketball and cycle safety training. Lámh sign language is used across all classes, and the Weaving Wellbeing programme runs from 2nd to 6th class. Environmental work has earned Green School flags across several themes, and the school has been accredited under the Discover Primary Science and Maths scheme. Drama and choral verse speaking are taught, along with public speaking in the senior classes, and Aistear structures play in the infant classes. Grant funding has supplied Chromebooks and iPads for digital skills work. An Erasmus+ project examined student and autistic voice in teaching and learning, involving staff training, a pupil exchange to the Netherlands and job-shadowing in Croatia.
