About
Scoil Naisiunta Naomh Ailbhe is a Catholic mixed primary school in Geevagh, County Sligo. The school opened in September 2023 following the amalgamation of St. Joseph's National School, Kilmactranny and St. Patrick's National School, Geevagh. It occupies the site formerly used by St. Patrick's National School. Enrolment stands at 97 pupils. The school has erected a commemorative plaque in memory of all the schools that once served the parish. A grant received in 2021 under the Irish National Recovery and Resilience Plan was used to address the digital divide and support learners at risk of educational disadvantage.
History
The parish of Geevagh once had six schools, and St. Ailbhe's is now the only one remaining after a series of amalgamations. St. Brigid's National School, Highwood opened in 1890 and closed in 1976, amalgamating with Cloonagh National School, which had opened in 1925 and remained open until 1978. In 1978, that school amalgamated with St. Joseph's National School, Kilmactranny, which had opened in 1932 and remained open until June 2023. Mount Town National School served pupils from 1906 until 1973, when it amalgamated with St. Patrick's National School, Geevagh. St. James' Well school opened in 1893 and closed in 1977, with pupils moving to St. Patrick's. St. Patrick's National School opened in 1942, and a new school building was opened on the site in 2002. That building now houses St. Ailbhe's National School.
