About
Scoil Naisiunta Liosceanuir is a rural primary school situated in the picturesque coastal village of Liscannor, County Clare. Set against the backdrop of the Atlantic sea, the school benefits from fresh air, sweeping sea views and a spacious outdoor play area, creating an inspiring environment for children to learn, play and develop confidence. The campus combines traditional classroom spaces with ample outdoor facilities, encouraging a balanced approach that blends the Irish National Curriculum with experiential learning, nature‑based activities and community involvement. The school places a strong emphasis on fostering a supportive, inclusive community where pupils are encouraged to explore their creativity, develop critical thinking skills and build social responsibility. Through its participation in the Green Schools programme, the school promotes environmental awareness and sustainability, integrating eco‑friendly projects into everyday lessons. A broad range of extracurricular activities, including sports, music and cultural events, further enriches the pupil experience, helping each child to grow academically, socially and personally.
History
The current school building was officially blessed by Rev. Dr Browne, Bishop of Galway, and opened by Dr Patrick Hillery, Minister for Education, on 23 June 1961. It is named after St McCreehy, a 6th‑century local monk, whose ruined church remains in a nearby graveyard. The 1961 structure replaced an earlier school erected in 1850 on the site now occupied by the community centre. Historically, the parish of Liscannor once hosted four primary schools (Moymore, Ballycotton, St Brigid’s Well and Liscannor). Following the closures of Moymore and Ballycotton, their principals joined Liscannor NS, which operated with three teachers and three principals until 1981. In 1983 the school’s leadership was streamlined with the appointment of a single principal and two teachers, marking the modern era of the school.
