About

With 139 pupils on roll, Scoil Mhuire is a co-educational Catholic primary school close to the centre of Borrisokane, Co. Tipperary. The school has DEIS status, and patronage rests with the Bishop of Killaloe. Teaching is arranged in single and combined year groups from Junior Infants to 6th Class, and an autism class known as Bluebells runs alongside the mainstream classes. Children of all faiths and none are admitted. The school code is stated in Irish, carrying the sense that castles are raised from small stones. The crest was drawn from pupils and chosen by them: a key for knowledge and for the Diocese of Killaloe, three jumping children for the active style of learning used, a hurley and ball for sport in the school and the surrounding area, and a tree for the subjects taught inside and outside the curriculum. The school states its aim as knowing every pupil well and treating each child as an individual.

History

The building dates from 1949, when it opened as the Boys' School in Borrisokane. It continued in that form until 1997, when it amalgamated with the Convent National School and admitted girls and boys together for the first time. The school describes itself as having a long tradition of teaching in the town, and as the place where many local people began their education.
