About
Scoil Mhuire is a co‑educational primary school that provides a nurturing environment for children from Junior Infants through to Sixth Class. The school day begins at 8.50 am, with Junior and Senior Infants finishing at 1.30 pm and the older classes concluding at 2.30 pm. A strong emphasis is placed on a balanced curriculum that integrates academic learning with a wide range of extracurricular activities, including physical education, athletics, science projects and active school weeks. The school promotes holistic development through partnerships, green initiatives and a vibrant programme of school activities that encourage teamwork, creativity and community involvement. A distinctive feature of Scoil Mhuire is its commitment to the Green School Programme. The school strives for zero waste in pupils’ lunchboxes, encouraging the use of reusable bottles and containers, and promotes sustainable practices such as using kitchen roll instead of aluminium foil or plastic. The school also monitors energy, water and travel impacts, aiming to foster environmental stewardship among students. Facilities support these aims, offering dedicated spaces for sports, science exploration and collaborative learning, all underpinned by a clear mission to develop confident, responsible learners.
History
A school for girls in Clondalkin was started in the early 1800s by Mrs. Caldbeck of Moyle Park House, first in the gate lodge attached to her house and, from 1810, at Orchard Gate Lodge. Mrs. Caldbeck died in 1840, leaving £2000 to establish a convent of nuns for the education of children. Fr. John Moore, the Parish Priest, bought land and had a church and convent built, ready by spring 1857, and invited the Presentation Sisters from Carlow to teach there. As Clondalkin's population grew, the nuns built further schools, including Scoil Bríde, and Scoil Mhuire itself was built in 1950, with an upper storey added in 1957 to accommodate rising pupil numbers. Scoil Íde and Scoil Áine followed in 1967, and secondary pupils, previously taught in the convent, moved to the newly opened Coláiste Bríde in 1970.
