History

Scoil Chaitríona was founded in 1928 by the Dominican Sister An Mháthair Treasa at 22 Sráid Eccles, near Coláiste San Dominic. It was the first all-Irish secondary school for girls in Dublin. An Mháthair Treasa retired as principal in 1933, and a succession of Dominican Sisters led the school. With the arrival of free education in the late 1960s, pupil numbers grew and the Dominican Sisters sought a new site. A site on Bóthar Mobhí was found, and the school moved there officially in 1972 under the leadership of an tSiúr Eibhlín. The first boys were admitted in 1986, requiring new rooms and subjects such as woodwork and technical graphics. Transition Year was introduced during the principalship of an tSiúr Catherine, making Scoil Chaitríona the first all-Irish school to offer the programme. The first lay principal was Carmel Caomhánach, an iarscoláire. In 2006 the school came under the Le Chéile Trust. A new workshop block opened in 2023.
