About

Scoil Bhriocáin is a Catholic Gaeltacht primary school in Ros Muc, Co. Galway, under the patronage of the Archbishop of Galway. The school has official recognition as a Gaeltacht school and teaches all subjects through Irish. Enrolment stands at 19 pupils for the 2025/2026 school year. The school states its aim as creating a happy, positive atmosphere in which children can develop and grow, and giving every pupil an equal chance to take part in school events. The school has a policy for Gaeltacht education and participates in the Gaeltacht School Recognition Scheme.

History

Scoil Bhriocáin traces its history back to 1873. According to the school's account, a member of the gentry of Baile na hInse was travelling through An Gort Mór when she saw children playing by the roadside. On learning there was no school in the area, she provided money to build one. The original school was constructed on the site where the community hall now stands. Over time, the condition of the school deteriorated, and Colm Ó Gaora led a protest about its poor state. As a result, a new school was built on a different site, where the school has remained since.
