About
Rosenallis, in the Slieve Bloom mountains of Co. Laois, is the setting for this small rural primary school. It is co-educational and Catholic in ethos, with roughly 80 pupils taught across 4 mainstream classes and 2 autism classes. Staffing runs to 16 people, including class teachers, special education teachers and special needs assistants. Class groupings pair year levels together, so junior and senior infants share a room, as do 1st and 2nd, 3rd and 4th, and 5th and 6th. A bus service brings some pupils in, with escorts accompanying them. The school describes the learning environment it aims for as calm and structured. Sport is organised through Cumann na mBunscol, and pupils also take part in VEX robotics, swimming lessons in Portarlington as part of the physical education curriculum, tin whistle tuition and the Write-a-Book scheme. Green Schools work and an Active School strand feature in school life, and Irish-language material sits alongside English on school communications. Support in English as an additional language is provided, including for Ukrainian pupils. A navy tracksuit and a regular uniform are both worn.
