About
Set on the Cooley Peninsula in Co. Louth, Rathcor National School is a co-educational primary school taking pupils from Junior Infants through to Sixth Class. Teaching is organised across three mainstream classes, with a learning support teacher and a special needs assistant also in post. Infant classes finish earlier in the afternoon than First to Sixth Class. Environmental work runs through much of what the school does, through the An Taisce Green-Schools programme, where flags have been earned for litter and waste, energy, water conservation and travel, with biodiversity work following on. Pupils take part in a school garden, planting, litter picking under the Picker Pals scheme, battery collection and a coastal clean-up at nearby Rathcor beach. Walking, cycling and scooting to school are encouraged each Wednesday. The school also holds an Active School Flag, and pupils are coached in Gaelic football, soccer and rugby through links with clubs in the area. A student council and a wellbeing committee draw members from across the class groups, and wellbeing weeks bring in yoga, mindfulness and outdoor activity. Solar panels supply part of the school's electricity.
