About
Nenagh Community National School (CNS) is a pioneering co‑educational primary school in Tipperary, offering education for children from junior infant through to 6th class. As the county’s first multi‑denominational Community National School, it follows the national Primary School Curriculum while also delivering a dedicated multi‑belief and values programme, *Goodness Me, Goodness You!* (GMGY). The school’s ethos is built on five core values – Excellence in Education, Care, Equality, Community and Respect – which guide a learning environment that is safe, inclusive and focused on each child’s full potential regardless of background or ability. The school provides specialist provision for diverse needs, including a Sonas early‑intervention classroom for children on the autism spectrum and a Speech and Language Development class, “Chatty Kids”, which welcomes pupils from across North Tipperary. Modern facilities support a broad range of activities, from STEM projects to active‑school initiatives, and the school’s vibrant community life is reflected in regular assemblies, awards, and a strong emphasis on caring relationships and respect for all members of the school community.
History
Originally St Mary’s Junior Boys’ National School, the institution served the Nenagh community for 108 years before transitioning in 2022 to become Nenagh Community National School – the first CNS in the town and the largest school to divest to an Education and Training Board (ETB) patronage in the country. This change marked a historic shift from a Catholic‑patroned school to a multi‑denominational, co‑educational community school, continuing a legacy of pioneering initiatives such as early autism support and the “Chatty Kids” language class.
