About
Naomh Padraig N.S., known locally as Derrylamogue National School, stands between Rosenallis and Mountmellick in Co. Laois, on the lower ground of the Sliabh Bloom Mountains. It is a Catholic primary school for girls and boys, with 86 pupils and 6 teachers. An ASD class runs in addition to the mainstream classes. Science and STEM work has brought a Discovery Primary Science award, and environmental activity through Green Schools has brought a biodiversity flag, with a Global Citizenship flag also presented. Pupils have planted trees, flower seeds and a garden in the grounds. Recorded activities include rugby, drumming and art workshops, heritage visits, trips to a library and an aquarium, and events for Seachtain na Gaeilge. Wellbeing is treated as part of the school's self-evaluation work. The motto is given in Irish as Ní neart go cur le chéile. The school states its aim as a setting in which each child develops academically, emotionally, physically and spiritually.
History
Records for the school at Derrylamogue go back to 1872. An earlier building was put up in 1900 on the opposite side of the road from the current site, and its ruins are still standing. A new school was built on the present site in 1962, with a third room added in 1993 and two more classrooms in 2003. Work during the summer of 2007 enlarged the pitch and play areas. The following summer, in 2008, the frontage was tarred, a porch was built and the office, the resource room and the store for sports equipment were refurbished. An extension finished in 2015 provided 2 classrooms, an office, a boiler room and a hallway. In 2018 the car park was upgraded, with a wall built and a traffic management plan drawn up.
