History
Mary Ward (1585–1645) founded the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the 17th Century and established schools across Europe during her lifetime. Teresa Ball, a Dublin native, established its Irish branch in 1821; her first foundation, at Rathfarnham, became known as Loreto Abbey, and members of the order in Ireland took the name Loreto Sisters as a result. In 1925 the Loreto Order bought a residence and grounds that had belonged to the McCabe family; the property became Beaufort Domestic Science College, with its stables and coach houses turned into a Kindergarten, Junior and Secondary School. A separate school for senior girls was built in 1952, and a large extension, including classrooms, specialist rooms, a library and an assembly hall, was added in 1975.
