A strong emphasis is placed on nurturing each child’s voice and talents, encouraging confidence, empathy and active participation in the wider community. The school community comprises pupils, parents, teachers, support staff and a board of management, all working together to create a positive atmosphere in which every child feels valued and respected. Leitrim N.S. promotes holistic development through a balanced programme that integrates academic learning with spiritual growth, physical activity and cultural enrichment, preparing students to become confident, caring members of society.
History
Education in the Leitrim area began with clandestine hedge schools in the early 18th century, where teachers provided instruction in subjects such as arithmetic, Latin, Greek and music despite the restrictions of the Penal Laws. By 1829 a formal school was established in the parish, and in 1842 it became part of the National Board system following the National Schools Act of 1831. The original premises were housed in a nearby dwelling known locally as Downey’s House; in 1862 the school transferred to its present site, where it has remained ever since. Over the ensuing decades the school expanded its staff and facilities, maintaining its commitment to providing a Catholic education rooted in community values.
