About

Near Hollymount in south Mayo, Lehinch National School is a one-teacher Catholic primary school with DEIS status. Enrolment stands at 8 pupils. Breakfast and lunch are provided for every child. The building has been refurbished, and the school has worked with Trinity College since 2016, first through a postgraduate certificate in 21st century teaching and learning and later through the Trinity Access School of Distinction clinics. That work brought a Future Vision Award in 2017 and a full School of Distinction Award in 2018, the latter given to five schools in Ireland across primary and post-primary level. Science and technology projects account for much of the school's other recognition: a Science Foundation Ireland STEM plaque in 2018, Primary Science Fair awards in 2016 at the RDS and in 2018 at Mary I College in Limerick, two Intel Mini Scientist awards in 2018, and a Junior Entrepreneur Change Agent Award in 2018 for an internet safety game aimed at children, teenagers and families. An Taisce awarded a Green Schools flag for litter and waste in 2018.

History

The school has been in existence since 1843. To mark the centenary of the 1916 Rising, pupils wrote a proclamation of their own for a new generation, guided by their teacher and by parents. The uniform was revised in 2016, when a new crest was adopted showing three hands of different sizes and colours reaching towards the stars. The school explains the design as a statement of respect for diversity and for differing opinions and beliefs. The crest is worn on a red sweatshirt with a white polo shirt and black tracksuit bottoms from Monday to Friday. Teaching now takes place in a modern, refurbished building.
