About
Under the patronage of the Catholic Bishop of Clogher, Scoil Mhuire is the parish school for Aughnamullen West, at Latton near Castleblayney in Co. Monaghan. Around 160 pupils attend, from Junior Infants to Sixth Class, and the school is co-educational. Most year groups are taught in paired classes, with consecutive standards sharing a room up to fifth class, while sixth class is taught on its own. Staffing includes seven class teachers, three special education teachers and three special needs assistants. The stated aim is the development of pupils in intellectual, physical, cultural, moral and spiritual terms within a Catholic ethos, and the school says it provides for pupils of all abilities and admits children of other religions and from different ethnic backgrounds. Physical education runs through the Active School Flag programme, which includes an Active School Week and participation in European School Sports Day. Green Schools work, a student council and a parents' association also feature. Tin whistle is taught in the middle classes, and chess teams take part in tournaments.
